Costa Rica is Fabulous in Rainy Season!

Costa Rica 007
Julien near Manuel Antonio National Park

This is our son Julien when he was four years old. We took two weeks to travel through Costa Rica in September, during the rainy season. It’s a great time of year to go because you avoid the crowds, and the rains mostly came in the afternoon, around 3 p.m., once we had finished our day’s activities. We enjoyed seeing lizards and monkeys on the beach at Manuel Antonio National Park.

We rented a car and drove from there to plenty of other locations along the same stretch of ocean, and then went inland to visit and hike around the volcano, splurging a little on a beautiful resort there. Seafood, sand, volcanoes, swimming pools, and riding on cables through thick rainforest. Costa Rica is gorgeous and has a lot to offer.

A Beach House in Koh Samui, Thailand

During our two-month stay in Thailand in 2013, we knew we had to chill somewhere for more than a couple of weeks. So we spent three weeks on a quiet, peaceful beach in Koh Samui, letting our two kids run wild in front of our bungalow. We lucked out! We rented a great place from airbnb.com.

The water in front was calm and shallow, so we would wake in the morning, eat out on the deck, and let the kids splash around until it was time for that day’s adventures.

Eating Bugs in Bangkok

Ummmm… yummy… of course, eating dried crickets and worms is easy for Lily, who’s two years old and doesn’t have any pre-conceived ideas about eating bugs. She LOVES them, and asks for more. I asked my husband, Pierre, how they taste (ah-hmmm, I was the only family member unwilling to overlook my preconceptions and eat them). He said, “Crunchy, with soy sauce.” Here is Lily and Pierre, eating grasshoppers on the popular, touristy Khao San Road in Bangkok, a lively place to be–bugs or no bugs!

Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai, Thailand

In Chiang Mai, the largest city in northern Thailand, and a rich, cultural center considered to be the “city of ideas,” I sent my husband Pierre and seven-year-old Julien off to elephant camp . What is that, you ask? It is the opportunity to spend the day in the  wild country, working with your own elephant, riding, commanding   and bathing him, and generally being a “Mahout,” or “elephant rider.”  There are many options for mahout tours in Chiang Mai. Our first choice was the popular, eco-conscious Baan Chang Camp, but unfortunately, we called the day before, as was our habit, which is definitely not enough advance notice for this highly respected elephant camp. A week is needed. So, we ended up going with our hotel’s supported tour, Yogi Mahout, and it still made for a great, fulfilling day! See how Julien rides, and attempts to command, his little elephant in the video!
